An Actual SAT Expert. Really.
Elizabeth King is a leader in the SAT preparation field. She published her first book, OUTSMARTING the SAT, in 2008 with Ten Speed Press and has been working with the most elite private test preparation companies in the US for over eight years. She has worked with students from Palm Springs to Palm Beach and Manhattan to Dallas.
Much of the critical thinking and motivational skills that Elizabeth writes about here and at StayOutOfSchool were first hatched while learning to teach students how to creatively and independently solve problems and analyze written language. Her philosophy is based entirely on expecting students to be able to learn everything tested on the SAT and the ACT–and she is committed to ensuring that each of them does. She is an outspoken advocate of using the test to teach real math, grammar, and reading skills that students can use in college, rather than gaming or “teaching to the test.” Students gain real academic confidence from the method because they realize that they really can learn.
If you have a high school student in your life that’s preparing for college entrance, please check out OUTSMARTING the SAT and Elizabeth’s boutique test preparation company Elizabeth King Coaching. The website is full of answers to questions we hear from parents all about how to choose between the ACT and SAT, how and when to begin preparing for the tests, and writing college essays.
A Few Recent Notes From Students
Elizabeth, Just wanted to let you know that I got accepted into the Auburn University College of Science and Mathematics for fall 2011. I was also awarded a $20,000 academic charter scholarship. I couldn’t have done it without your help. After five years in the Marines I couldn’t even remember how to do long division. I had just gotten back from deployment with one month to prepare for the SAT, and you got me … [a 200 point increase from my practice tests] in the math portion and to the 99th percentile in reading. ~Ann
Elizabeth’s tutoring and Outsmarting the SAT really changed the way I took the SAT. She helped me realize that, for each of the three sections, there are specific types of problems that can be easily solved if recognized. Personally, SAT math is sometimes more challenging than AP Calculus, simply because I never learned some of the math that the SAT tests. Elizabeth taught me how to solve puzzling math questions that are on virtually every standardized test, which words are mutually inclusive, how to eliminate choices by analyzing each response, and all the typical College Board tricks. Thanks to Elizabeth and her methodical approach, I was able to score a 2300! ~Spencer
